How do I figure out what triggers my phone use?
Review your screen time data weekly to understand your actual usage patterns and identify the triggers behind mindless scrolling.

Most people dramatically underestimate their screen time—studies show users guess about half their actual usage. Your phone’s built-in Screen Time features provide objective data about your habits.
Review these statistics to identify patterns: Are you reaching for your phone most often in the morning, during commutes, on lunch breaks, or late in the evening? Try to discern critical times of day or locations where you tend to lose the most time mindlessly scrolling. These might be good situations for scheduled app blocking to help you break the pattern.
Equally important are emotional triggers: emotions or thoughts that lead you to pick up your phone. Understanding these triggers is the first step to changing behavior. Try to observe: What emotions or moods triggered my longest sessions? Did I reach for my phone out of boredom? Was I craving connection? Was I tired and in need of a break? Look beyond total time to pickup frequency—many small pickups throughout the day are often more disruptive to wellbeing than a single longer session.
When you’ve uncovered your triggers and patterns, the next step is to think of healthy alternatives that would serve you better than mindless scrolling. What could you do instead? Read a book? Call a friend? Go for a walk? In Moment’s Wellbeing reflection, you can set an intention for a healthy offline activity and build a habit of staying present.
