Awareness & Self-Reflection

How do I use my phone more intentionally?

Before each phone pickup, mentally state your specific purpose—this transforms reactive habits into deliberate choices.

Most phone pickups happen without conscious intention—your hand reaches for the device before your mind has formed a purpose. Setting clear intentions before each phone session transforms reactive habits into deliberate choices.

Before unlocking, pause and mentally complete the sentence: "I'm picking up my phone to..." If you can't articulate a specific purpose, that's valuable information. Write down your intention if it helps—"check email," "look up a recipe," "text Mom." When you've completed that task, put the phone down.

This practice interrupts the common pattern of picking up for one purpose and getting sidetracked for 20 minutes. Over time, you'll develop a natural awareness of the gap between intentional and habitual use, making mindless scrolling feel increasingly uncomfortable.
