Notifications, Communication & Limits

How do I set screen time boundaries with the people around me?

Communicate your availability boundaries clearly—most people respect limits and often feel relieved to have permission to set their own.

Much of our compulsive phone checking stems from social expectations—the implicit pressure to respond immediately to messages, emails, and notifications. These expectations are often self-imposed or exaggerated in our minds.

Communicating your availability boundaries explicitly can liberate both you and the people you interact with. Let colleagues know you check email at specific times. Tell friends you may not respond to non-urgent texts for several hours. Set an auto-responder during focus periods.

Most people respect clearly communicated boundaries and often express relief at being freed from the same pressures themselves. Remember that being constantly available isn't a virtue—it's a recipe for shallow work, fractured attention, and burnout. Your best contributions come from protected time, not perpetual accessibility.
