Why should I keep my phone out of the bedroom?

Keep phones out of the bedroom entirely—sleep quality affects willpower, mood, and every aspect of next-day functioning.

Sleep is the foundation of physical health, cognitive function, and emotional regulation—and screen use is its primary modern enemy. Beyond blue light’s suppression of melatonin, the psychological stimulation from content consumption keeps your mind active when it should be winding down.

Social media’s emotional triggers, work emails’ stress, and news-related anxiety all disrupt the calm mental state necessary for restorative sleep. The bedroom should be devoted to sleep and intimacy only.

Charge your phone in another room—if you need an alarm, buy a simple alarm clock. Establish a technology curfew at least half an hour before bed. The quality of your sleep directly affects your next day’s willpower, mood, and decision-making capacity, including your ability to resist problematic phone use.

We know that moving your phone out of the bedroom can feel like a hard step—but it’s totally worth it! Because protecting sleep means protecting everything else.
